If HBP Had a Yearbook…

School is officially back in session across Houston. Kids are meeting their teachers, figuring out new schedules, and remembering that summer apparently does, in fact, end.

Meanwhile, at Houston Bark Park & Daycare, our students have been following a slightly different curriculum. There are best friends. Favorite teachers. Extracurriculars. Picture days. Snack breaks. And some very strong opinions about who gets the good spot in the splash pad. So naturally, we decided HBP deserved its own yearbook.

FAVORITE SUBJECT: RECESS

This wasn't even close.

While Houston kids have to wait for the recess bell, HBP pups have the Bark Park.

Running with their crew. Wrestling with their best friend. Cooling off in the water. Chasing something that absolutely did not need to be chased. Or finding the perfect spot to supervise everyone else while doing as little physical activity as possible.

Every dog has their own version of a perfect day at HBP and our team gets to know exactly what that looks like.

Course requirements: Good play yard manners and an appreciation for a very good game of chase.

HONORS CLASS: HBP ACADEMY

Some pups are perfectly happy majoring in Recess. Others want electives.

That's where Academy comes in. Each month, our Academy calendar brings a new lineup of enrichment activities designed to get dogs sniffing, searching, problem-solving, exploring and building confidence.

It's especially great for dogs who enjoy extra one-on-one attention, pups who may be a little shy in a big group, and those overachievers who believe there should be treats associated with every academic pursuit. Basically, it's the HBP honors program.

Dean's List requirement: Willingness to work for snacks.

MOST PHOTOGENIC: THE ENTIRE HBP STUDENT BODY

At most schools, picture day happens once a year. We found that unacceptable.

HBP photo shoots have become their own tradition, with handmade sets, elaborate props and themes that routinely begin with “Wouldn't it be funny if…” and end with us building something completely ridiculous for dogs.

We've created more than 100 themed sets and taken more dog photos than any reasonable group of people should probably admit.

And this week, our School of Rock pups are taking the stage at Maxie and Shepherd. Because apparently regular school pictures weren't enough.

Obviously.

BEST CAFETERIA: THE HBP TREAT DEPARTMENT

Technically, HBP does not have a cafeteria. Our students remain deeply disappointed by this administrative decision.

We do, however, believe a good school day deserves a good snack.

That means special treats throughout the year and monthly creations like August's Pup Colada Kong—because nothing says back-to-school season quite like your dog enjoying a tiny tropical vacation while you're sitting in Houston traffic. The cafeteria petition has been tabled for another year.

MOST LIKELY TO KNOW EVERY STUDENT'S ENTIRE PERSONALITY: THE HBP TEAM

Not just their name. We know who runs through the door ready to find their best friend. Who needs a minute to warm up. Who lives for the water. Who prefers the calmer crowd. Who has perfected the art of convincing a team member that they have definitely not received enough attention today.

And yes, we know exactly which dogs completely lose their minds when they see their favorite HBP person.

That's a big part of what makes Houston Bark Park different.

Your dog isn't simply another name on the day's roster. They're one of our dogs, and our team learns the personalities, friendships and quirks that make them who they are. We get up close and personal with all of our pups! We even health check them three times a day!

BEST FIELD TRIP: LEASH

Some students ride the school bus. HBP pups can arrive via LEASH. Our partnership with Houston's pet transportation service gives HBP families another way to get their pups to and from the Bark Park when schedules get crazy.

You book directly through LEASH; they handle the ride, and your pup still gets their HBP day. It's especially convenient on those days when getting across Houston somehow requires snacks, three alternate routes, and an emotional support podcast.

Houston traffic: 0.

MOST LIKELY TO FALL ASLEEP BEFORE LEAVING THE PARKING LOT: HBP PUPS

There is one HBP educational outcome parents seem particularly fond of:

The post-HBP nap. After playing with friends, exploring the Bark Park, working those brains in Academy and accomplishing a full day's worth of extremely important dog business, there's a familiar moment at pickup. They hop into the car. They settle down. And somewhere between HBP and home…

Out.

Another successful day of higher education.

BEST SCHOOL SPIRIT: OUR HBP FAMILIES

This one isn't a joke.

HBP wouldn't be HBP without the families who have turned this place into a community. You book the ridiculous photo shoots. You celebrate birthdays with us.

You come to Cinco de Barko, Howl-O-Ween and our other events. You proudly share photos of your dog dressed like they have a career they absolutely do not have.

You tell your friends about us.

And, most importantly, you trust our team with someone who means an awful lot to your family.

That's why HBP has never been about simply giving dogs somewhere to go while their humans are busy.

It's their place, too.

Their friends are here. Their favorite people are here. Their routines are here. And there is almost always something new happening. We probably won't be handing out diplomas anytime soon, but after years of watching HBP pups, we think they've already figured out the important stuff:

Make good friends. Try new things. Be nice. Play hard. Never skip snack time. And never, ever underestimate the importance of recess.

Welcome back to school, Houston.

The HBP Class of 2026 is already crushing it.
