At Houston Bark Park & Daycare, we’ve heard it all, from wild tales about what dogs can (and can’t) see, to age-old sayings that just don’t hold up. So today, we’re sniffing out the silliest myths and setting the record straight. Ready to bust some pup-lore? Welcome to the ultimate doggy edition of MythBusters: Houston Bark Park Style, where we sniff out the silliest dog myths to find the truth!

Myth: Dogs see the world in black and white.

Status: BUSTED 🧪

Contrary to popular belief, dogs don’t see life in shades of gray. While they don’t see the full color spectrum like humans, they CAN see colors — mostly blues and yellows. Fun fact: this is why we chose blue uniforms for our staff at Houston Bark Park. We wanted to make sure our furry friends could recognize us clearly!

👉 Paw-parent tip: If you’re buying toys, choose blue or yellow ones. They’ll “pop” in your dog’s vision much more than reds or greens.

Paw-nder this: Some animals, like birds and chameleons, actually see more colors than we do.

Myth: A wagging tail always means a happy dog!

Status: BUSTED 🧪

Tail wags can mean a lot of things! While many are happy, a slow, stiff wag can signal uncertainty, and a high, fast wag might mean excitement or even a warning.

👉 Paw-parent tip: Don’t just look at the tail. Watch your dog’s ears, eyes, and posture for the full story. At Houston Bark Park, our staff is trained to read these cues so all pups feel safe and comfortable.

Myth: You can’t teach an old dog new tricks.

Status: MAJORLY BUSTED 🧪

At Houston Bark Park and Daycare, we see senior pups learning new tricks and games every day! Age is just a number. The key is creativity, patience, and finding what motivates your dog.

👉 Paw-parent tip: Keep training sessions short and positive, and use softer treats that are easy to chew.

Myth: Only certain breeds like daycare.

Status: TOTALLY BUSTED 🧪

From high-energy huskies to toy-sized terriers, daycare can be a great fit for all breeds. Big runners love our spacious yards, water-loving pups flock to our splash pads, and toy breeds enjoy cuddles from our pet pals.  Don't let preconceived notions about breeds stop your pup from having a howling good time with us!

👉 Paw-parent tip: The right daycare isn’t about breed, it’s about matching your pup’s personality with the right playgroup and activities (which we specialize in!).

Myth: Dogs only need grooming if they have long hair.

Status: MAJORLY BUSTED 🧪

Even short-haired dogs benefit from regular grooming. Brushing helps remove loose fur, distributes natural oils for a healthy coat, and keeps skin in good condition. Grooming also lets you check for lumps, bumps, fleas, or skin issues you might otherwise miss.

Paw-nder this: All dogs, whether they’re fluffy doodles or sleek short-haired breeds, need some level of regular grooming to stay healthy and comfortable.

Bonus Myth: The staff at Houston Bark Park love dogs.

Status: ABSOLUTELY TRUE ❤️ 🧪

Okay, okay, not a myth, just a shameless truth! Our team is comprised of dog lovers! Your pups are treated like family here.
